Procrastinating. We've all done it at some point in our lives. I know I'm guilty- my browsing history goes from an article for my English class to email to Facebook to stumbleupon to YouTube and then back to Facebook... It's a never-ending cycle of not getting any work done.
Most of the time though, I'm a pretty hard working student who doesn't get distracted too easily. I just plug in my Ipod and work for hours on end without stopping for breaks (crazy, but it's the norm) and then I get the work done.
Here's the thing that's weird about me: I can't relax after I finish all that I need to get done. You might say, "Why not? You've finished everything that you have to do. Just chill and do what you want now." But honestly, after I get everything done, I think to myself, "Isn't there a bit more you can do? Isn't there a bit more to get ahead on?"
I swear, this isn't normal. I'm a 19 year old workaholic. I should be celebrating or taking time to relax when I finish all my work, but no. What do I do instead? I create more work for myself. I literally guilt myself into working more and trying to "get ahead." At times when I'm with my friends, I still think about and plan what I'm going to do when I get back to my apartment and what classes I have tomorrow and homework that I still have to finish.
It's quite pathetic in a way. I'm sure this is why my friends pointed out to me that "having fun" must be the lowest priority on my list.
Well, that's kinda sad, isn't it? College is supposed to be the best time in a person's life since you can go explore, try new things, and have fun. But most nights, I sit here in my apartment on my laptop constantly doing work.
Being a workaholic isn't the most terrible thing though since you'll always have the peace of mind that "yes, I'm ahead of the game." But, you know what? It sure sucks the fun out of life.
So, the take home lesson for this entry is that: BALANCE IS KEY. Everything in your life needs moderation from how much food you eat, how much sleep you get, and especially in my case, how much work you do. I fully believe that work before play is the best route, but sometimes, going to play and relax will actually contribute to shelling out better work.
So, if you're like me and a super workaholic or if you're someone who just seems to always be working and never "playing," get out there and enjoy your life! Treat yourself after a long day with a decadent chocolate cake, spend an evening with your loved ones, go out with friends and party. Do whatever you like to do and what makes you happy because you deserve it. :)
Huh... maybe I should start taking my own advice.
